Own the Podium (OTP)

Own the Podium is a not-for-profit organization that provides leadership for Canadian sports to achieve sustainable and improved podium performances at the Olympic and Paralympic Games through a values-based approach. It prioritizes and determines investment strategies for National Sport Organizations in an effort to deliver more Olympic and Paralympic medals for Canada. Own the Podium’s largest contributor of funding is the Government of Canada with additional funding provided by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), the Canadian Olympic Foundation, and the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC). Own the Podium continues to drive Canada’s high performance sport system forward in a quest to help more athletes and coaches succeed in future Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Scope of Position

Reporting to the Manager, Data Analytics, the Data Scientist supports Own the Podium in identifying, analyzing, and interpreting relevant data to transform data into actionable insights that support high performance sport in Canada. The position conducts data analysis develops visualizations and reporting products, and supports the implementation and continuous improvement of analytics methodologies and processes. Working collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders, the Data Scientist contributes to analytics initiatives and data-informed decision-making across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the identification and analysis of key performance data needs and contribute to transforming raw data into actionable insights using business systems.
  • Support the design, implementation, and application of statistical models to support complex high-performance sport initiatives.
  • Clean, integrate, and manage complex datasets to support reliable analysis and analytical processes.
  • Support the development and application of metrics. Develop metrics, analyze trends, and develop data visualizations and reporting products for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Conduct sport-specific analysis and contribute to the preparation of data-driven insights for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and contribute to cross-functional projects, analytics initiatives, and continuous improvement activities related to reporting and departmental processes.

Experience, Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field, with at least 2 years of data science experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of data analytics principles, evaluation methodologies, project management, and sport science practices.
  • Experience conducting data analysis, identifying datasets, and applying statistical methods (e.g., linear models, hypothesis testing, sampling).
  • Proficiency in data visualization and analytics tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, etc.) and standard office software (Microsoft 365 Suite).
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL is required.
  • Experience researching, analyzing, and presenting analytical insights, reports, and performance-related insights to stakeholders.
  • Ability to contribute effectively within projects and cross-functional teams in support of data-driven decision-making and organizational initiatives.
  • Proficiency in extraction transformation loading (ETL) pipelines and automation functions.
  • Familiarity/Experience with the high-performance sport landscape (asset).

Compensation

  • Final compensation will be based on qualifications and experience.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional travel to Ottawa headquarters
  • Remote or hybrid work
  • Office environment with extensive computer use
