Scope of Position
The National Lead, Paralympic Excellence is a senior strategic leadership role jointly established by Own the Podium (OTP) and the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC). This role is designed to drive transformational change and alignment across the Canadian Paralympic sport pathway to increase podium potential and optimize system wide performance.
The recently tabled Paralympic Summer Sport Strategy (grounded in NSO and key stakeholder engagement) has underscored the need for change and will provide the foundation for forward evolution. Therefore, this role will oversee the operationalization of initial priorities including athlete development, classification, coaching and technical leadership, equipment and innovation, and system optimization in addition to championing a values based, high performance culture. To execute with impact, the successful candidate will work/collaborate cross functionally within OTP and CPC and in deep partnership with National Sport Organizations (NSOs), Disability Sport Organizations (DSOs), Provincial/Territorial Sport Organizations (PTSOs), Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network (COPSIN), and other key system partners. Winter sport engagement will occur after the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Key Responsibilities
As a senior leader within the Canadian high performance sport system, the National Lead, Paralympic Excellence will be responsible for working with the OTP VP, Summer Sport and CPC Chief Sport Officer to set strategic direction, guide cross organizational collaboration, and oversee the execution of system wide priorities. This role will lead through influence, coordination and the ability to inspire collaboration and ongoing improvement — empowering expert teams and partners/stakeholders to build and deliver on Canada’s Paralympic performance objectives.
- Provide strategic leadership in the development and implementation of a nationally integrated Paralympic sport pathway.
- Delivery of key priorities/initiatives with clear scope, milestones and outcomes.
- Advise on and contribute to governance and accountability structures that support high trust partnerships and mandate alignment to enable effective engagement and collaboration.
- Direct a cross functional expert group to ensure key priorities/initiatives are executed within established timelines.
- Oversee the implementation of key priorities/initiatives, monitoring and evaluation processes related to key system priorities and initiatives ensuring that performance indicators, benchmarks, and progress metrics are clearly defined, regularly reviewed, and used to inform decision making, resource allocation and strategic/operational recommendations.
- Lead the development of robust communication and knowledge sharing, coordinate reporting mechanisms and ensure progress/findings are shared effectively to support ongoing improvement and strategic alignment throughout the Paralympic sport system.
Experience, Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum 5 to 7 years of senior level experience in high performance sport, including Paralympic environments.
- Proven leadership in strategic planning and operational execution.
- Demonstrated experience with complex project management from design to delivery, including leading diverse teams/engaging multiple stakeholder groups and a proven record of execution within scope, on time and with impact.
- Deep understanding of Paralympic sport systems, athlete and coach development, classification, and data sciences or analytics.
- Experience working with NSOs, DSOs, PTSOs, and multi stakeholder environments.
- Strong emotional intelligence, facilitation, and relationship building skills.
